DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations - Hell's Core Maykr Syphon

An exciting and smaller project was figuring out what the Maykrs could be feeding on in the Hell core. Not only that but 'how'.

Using the idea Gavin Manner's work established that there was tons of gore covered in ice and snow... through iteration we came to the conclusion that a mechanism/leech/syphon would be sapping the pre-processed soul energy (seen in DOOM Eternal's hell's soul-harvesting factory.) from a massive vein. This would also have the blue-ish glow of the soul energy traveling through it and also serve as a visual tell that also helped guide the player towards the end goal in some place.

Here are a couple concepts (one is final) for the actual leech attached to the artery after it has been partially 'excavated' out of the snow. Both of the maykr elements pulling the ground 'flesh' apart were based on surgery tools used during basic and major operations . I've also included very quick 'artery' paintovers of screenshots from the level that I used to help pitch the idea and the color/theming of how these would look. 'Unprocessed soul' blue inspired glow was a risk due to the ice environment but I think it works.

Additionally a quick boarded animatic to show how the process of cutting it and then falling to the lower chasm would look in a first person cinematic. Finally a quick breakdown of what's actually happening in the space.
