The Rail Spike Class of weapons started with iteration of this ! It was an incredibly fun and challenging exorcise to bring a new type of weapon to the DOOM series. While it started as sort of a crossbow (later fully realized by another weapon, the BFC) it evolved into what I had imagined to be a heavy power tool used in sentinel construction. We refined the design story more as it became more of a heavy hitting weapon.
One design aspect I am thrilled made it to the end was the idea of the various hammer types hitting the rune on the spike which ignites its and contributes to its power. Thus each spike type as you upgrade has a different rune (as well as on its shredder counter part).
